The SETI Institute and the Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO) have announced a partnership to advance astronomy research, space science education and public engagement. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aims to merge modern scientific exploration with the Maldives’ deep-rooted traditions in celestial navigation. MSRO was founded in the Maldives in 2022, with a vision to help Maldives become a spacefaring nation making significant contributions to the exploration and use of space. It is now the official space organisation of Maldives through authorisation from Ministry of Defence.

The partnership was initiated during the 2024 Space for Island Nations Conference (SIN2024), where SETI became aware of MSRO’s initiatives to involve students and the broader community in astronomy. Recently, MSRO obtained a Unistellar telescope, allowing learners and visitors to participate in observational astronomy. They also released a cultural star map, showcasing constellations and celestial patterns tied to Maldivian seafaring heritage.

Under this agreement, the two organizations will collaborate on scientific research, policy development, and resource exchange. The SETI Institute will assist MSRO in strengthening astronomy education by offering technical support, training programs, and guidance for scientists, educators, and government officials. The partnership will also expand citizen science initiatives and foster public involvement through interactive educational activities.

Currently, MSRO is running astronomy outreach programs across the Maldives, where participants use the Unistellar telescope to explore the night sky while connecting with the nation’s maritime history.
