NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) is moving from an ambitious proposal toward a detailed mission plan focused on directly imaging and characterizing potentially habitable exoplanets.
In August 2024, NASA created the HWO Technology Maturation Project Office to coordinate the scientific and engineering work required before the mission’s Concept Review near the end of the decade. A new planning report organizes development around three technology tracks that must reach Technology Readiness Level 5, meaning they have been validated in a relevant environment:
– The first track is the coronagraph, which must suppress starlight by a factor of 10 billion so faint planets can be seen close to their stars. The design relies on deformable mirrors controlled by 96-by-96 actuator arrays with picometer precision, along with highly sensitive photon-counting detectors;
– The second track focuses on telescope stability. HWO must maintain extraordinary pointing accuracy for observations lasting hours or days. Engineers must – control thermal expansion, vibrations, and tiny spacecraft movements using low-expansion materials, active thermal systems, micro-thrusters, isolation technologies, and precision mirrors;
– The third track involves sensors and optical coatings. Because HWO will also serve as a major astrophysics observatory, it must operate from near-infrared to far-ultraviolet wavelengths. This requires improved mirror coatings, large-format ultraviolet detectors, next-generation microshutter arrays, and digital micromirror devices.
NASA plans to mature these systems through a gradual “crawl-walk-run” approach, building on lessons from the James Webb and Nancy Grace Roman space telescopes. Specialized facilities, including the EPIC-5 coronagraph testbed and the HWO Systems Testbed, will evaluate how the technologies perform together under space-like conditions.
The coming years will be critical. If key milestones are not met by the Mission Concept Review, the project could be delayed or cancelled. International collaboration is already beginning, and the new report is expected to guide the technical development of NASA’s next Great Observatory.
